The story behind the stamp
The AES began as a 2023 mutual defence pact between Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. It became a confederation in July 2024 through a treaty signed in Niamey. The three states left ECOWAS in January 2025 and have since built shared institutions, including a 5,000-strong unified force, a confederal parliament and the AES Television channel. Together the bloc represents roughly 78 million people. In October 2026, AES and ECOWAS ministers opened formal talks in Dakar on a new cooperation framework, keeping the Sahel in the headlines. This poster is a piece of political art that documents this moment in Sahelian and Pan-African history.
