In May 1963, Selassie emerged as the key mediator between two rival blocs of African nations, using his standing as a veteran head of state to bring leaders together in Addis Ababa. His diplomacy reconciled the competing visions of pan-African unity, and in 1963 he presided over the formation of the Organization of African Unity — the precursor to today's African Union — serving as its first chairman.
