Jean-Jacques Dessalines Haiti Vintage Postage Stamp T-Shirt

Wear the story of the Haitian Revolution. This vintage postage stamp tee features Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the revolutionary leader who declared Haiti independent on January 1, 1804, framed in a Haiti flag perforated border with a red "HAITI" header, the Haitian flag, and a Haitian flag fingerprint.

Why Dessalines Matters

Jean-Jacques Dessalines (1758–1806) was born into slavery in Saint-Domingue and rose to become the general who led Haitian forces to victory over French colonial rule. On January 1, 1804, in Gonaïves, he proclaimed independence and restored the island's Indigenous name, Haïti (Ayiti). The result was the first republic founded by formerly enslaved people of African descent, and the first independent Black nation in the Americas.

That is why Dessalines is a foundational figure in Pan-African thought. His defeat of French colonial forces and the creation of Haiti in 1804 proved that people of African descent could overthrow slavery and build an independent, sovereign state.
