He co-founded the African American Students Airlift program in 1959, sending hundreds of East African students to study in the United States — a mission whose ripple effects reached families across the continent. A gifted orator and bridge-builder, he linked Kenya's fight for self-rule to the wider currents of global civil rights and Pan-Africanism, all cut short by his assassination in Nairobi in 1969 at age 38.
