In a 2020 BBC World Histories Magazine poll of over 5,000 readers, Amílcar Cabral was voted the second greatest leader in history — right behind a Sikh emperor and ahead of Winston Churchill. This vintage postage stamp-style portrait honors the man who earned that recognition: the founder of Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde's independence movement.
Born in Bafatá, Portuguese Guinea in 1924, Amílcar Cabral trained as an agronomist in Lisbon before returning home to found the PAIGC (African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde) in 1956. He went on to lead an eleven-year armed liberation struggle against Portuguese colonial rule, blending military strategy with a theory of culture as the foundation of resistance that influenced liberation movements across the globe. Cabral was assassinated on January 20, 1973, just months before Guinea-Bissau declared its independence that September — a movement his party carried to Cabo Verde's independence in 1975. His guiding principle, "tell no lies, claim no easy victories," remains one of the most quoted lines in African revolutionary thought.
