Jean-Jacques Dessalines, 1 Poster: A Vintage Postage Stamp Tribute to the Founder of Haiti

Honor the leader who helped break the chains of slavery and gave Haiti its independence. This Enhanced Matte Paper poster presents Jean-Jacques Dessalines as a vintage postage stamp, complete with a perforated Haitian flag border, a bold red "HAITI" header, a blue name caption, the Haitian flag behind him, and a Haiti flag fingerprint that marks the identity and legacy of a nation.

Who Was Jean-Jacques Dessalines?
- Born into slavery in 1758 in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, he rose to become one of the principal generals of the Haitian Revolution.
- He led the Haitian army to victory over French colonial forces at the Battle of Vertières on November 18, 1803.
- On January 1, 1804, he declared the independence of Haiti, which became the first free Black republic and the first nation in the Americas to permanently abolish slavery.
- He took the title Jacques I, Emperor of Haiti, in 1804 and ruled until 1806.

Why He Matters to Pan-Africanism
Dessalines's victory over French colonial forces and the creation of Haiti in 1804 proved that people of African descent could overthrow slavery and build an independent, sovereign state. That achievement is a cornerstone of Pan-African thought and has inspired liberation movements across Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora for more than two centuries.
