Who is Angela Davis?
Born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1944, Angela Yvonne Davis grew up in a neighborhood nicknamed "Dynamite Hill" for the racially motivated bombings that targeted Black families there. She studied philosophy under Marxist theorist Herbert Marcuse, became closely associated with the Black Panther Party, and rose to international prominence following her 1970–72 trial, after which she was acquitted. Davis went on to a decades-long academic career, serving as Distinguished Professor Emerita of Feminist Studies and History of Consciousness at UC Santa Cruz. Her scholarship and activism span prison abolition, Black feminism, and Pan-African solidarity — she has described Pan-Africanism as a living, evolving connection forged through shared struggles against imperialism and capitalism.
