The Man Behind the Music
- Born October 15, 1938, in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Died August 2, 1997, in Lagos.
- Blended Yoruba music with jazz, funk, and highlife to create Afrobeat.
- Son of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the pioneering feminist and labor activist.
- Founded the Kalakuta Republic, a Lagos commune and studio he declared independent from the Nigerian state.
- Released "Zombie," which satirized mindless military obedience. In February 1977, roughly 1,000 soldiers raided Kalakuta, and the compound was destroyed.
- Dropped the name Ransome for Anikulapo and formed a political party, the Movement of the People, in 1979.
