About Tom Mboya: Thomas Joseph Odhiambo Mboya (1930–1969) was a Kenyan trade unionist, educator, and Pan-Africanist who rose from a sanitary inspector in Nairobi to become one of the most influential architects of Kenya's independence. As Secretary-General of the Kenya Federation of Labour and later the Kenya African National Union (KANU), he led the Kenyan delegation at the Lancaster House Conferences that negotiated freedom from British colonial rule. In 1958, at just 28, he chaired Kwame Nkrumah's All-African Peoples' Conference. He is also remembered for launching the Airlift Africa program with John F. Kennedy, which sent hundreds of East African students — including Wangari Maathai — to study at American universities. Mboya served as Kenya's Minister of Justice and later Minister for Economic Planning and Development until his assassination in 1969.
