Celebrate Mashujaa Day (Heroes’ Day, October 20) with this Kenya heroes sticker strip: five vintage postage stamp portraits of Dedan Kimathi, Wangari Maathai, Tom Mboya, Raila Odinga and Mekatilili wa Menza on one kiss-cut vinyl strip (15 x 3.75 in).

Mashujaa is Swahili for “heroes.” Each stamp honours someone whose courage shaped Kenya, and in many cases Africa and the world.

Dedan Kimathi: Field Marshal of the Mau Mau
Dedan Kimathi was the best-known leader of the Mau Mau uprising against British colonial rule. He organised the forest fighters of the Aberdare range and the Mount Kenya region and became a symbol of uncompromising resistance. He was captured in 1956 and executed in February 1957. His defiance is remembered across Africa as part of the wave of anti-colonial struggle that led to independence for many nations.

Wangari Maathai: Mother of Trees, Nobel Peace Laureate
Wangari Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977, mobilising women to plant millions of trees. In 2004 she became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Her work went beyond Kenya: the movement helped inspire tree-planting and community programmes in other African countries, and she championed forest protection in the Congo Basin. She showed that environmental care, women’s rights and democracy are linked.

Tom Mboya: Trade Unionist and Independence Architect
Tom Mboya rose from union leader to one of the most influential figures of Kenya’s independence era. In 1958, aged 28, he chaired the All-African Peoples’ Conference in Accra, a landmark Pan-African gathering of liberation movements. He also helped organise airlifts that sent hundreds of East African students to study abroad, building a generation of educated leaders. He was assassinated in 1969.

Raila Odinga: “Baba,” Reformer and Pan-Africanist
Raila Odinga spent decades in the struggle for multiparty democracy, was detained under the one-party state, and served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013. He later served as the African Union’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development and sought the chair of the AU Commission, advocating for a more connected, integrated continent. He died in October 2025 and was honoured with the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya.

Mekatilili wa Menza: Giriama Queen of Resistance
Mekatilili wa Menza was a Giriama woman who, around 1913, rallied her people against British colonial rule at the Kenyan coast. She organised oath gatherings and dances to unite the community against forced labour and taxation. She was arrested and exiled, escaped, and returned to lead again. She is remembered as a pioneer among African women who resisted colonialism, and as proof that leadership didn’t wait for permission.
